What is a lactation consultant?

A lactation consultant is a healthcare professional who provides expert support to individuals on their breastfeeding journey. An International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) has specialized training in managing breastfeeding and lactation challenges.

2

Why do I need a lactation consultant?

Breastfeeding can sometimes come with challenges, and a Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) can provide expert support tailored to your unique needs. Whether you are experiencing latching issues, concerns about milk supply, or other breastfeeding difficulties, a lactation consultant ensures you feel confident and empowered in your feeding journey.

3

Do you accept insurance for lactation consultation appointments?

Yes, we accept United Healthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shields, Carefirst, and Aetna plans. We work with The Lactation Network, a third-party company that will verify your insurance and file claims if your insurance is accepted.

4

Can I still book lactation consultation appointments if my insurance is not accepted?

Yes, after you have gone through The Lactation Network (TLN) to verify your insurance acceptance but are not covered we can schedule a free 15-minute chat to discuss next steps.

5

How many visits are covered by insurance?

If your insurance is accepted, clients may get up to 6 covered lactation consultation appointments.

6

I am ready! How do I begin the process to book a lactation consultation appointment?

Great! I am ready too! Step1: Verify your insurance. Step 2: Book a 15-minute free consultation. Step 3: Appointment booked and lactation education and support begins.

7

How do I prepare for a home lactation visit?

To prepare for a lactation visit:

  • Complete the medical intake and release form on our website and send it back prior to your appointment.

  • If you have any questions, please feel free to email us at askus@pregnancyconcepts.com

  • It is ideal if your baby is ready to eat around the time of the visit (although I understand this may not always align perfectly).

  • If you would like for me to review your pump, have it available with all parts cleaned according to manufacturer's instructions.

  • Write down or record questions as they come to you so we can address them during the visit.

  • I am fine with animals in the home, but if they might be a distraction, consider placing them in another room during the appointment.

8

What can I expect during a home visit?

An initial home visit typically lasts up to 2 hours. During the appointment, I may do the following:

  1. Review your medical intake form.

  2. Address your breastfeeding issues and concerns.

  3. Conduct a physical or visual exam of mom's breasts.

  4. Perform an oral exam of your baby.

  5. Observe your baby nursing and possibly bottle-feeding.

  6. Weigh your baby before and after a feeding to assess milk intake.

  7. Develop a personalized care plan that may include email follow-ups with helpful links, videos, or referrals to specialists, if needed.

  8. If paying out of pocket, provide you with a receipt to submit for insurance reimbursement.

9

How do I follow up after a home visit?

Your initial visit includes follow-up support by email after the appointment. If additional visits are needed, these can be scheduled as in-home or virtual follow-up visits, depending on your preference.

What is a Certified Childbirth Educator?

A Certified Childbirth Educator is a trained professional who provides expectant parents with evidence-based education and strategies to prepare for labor, delivery, and postpartum recovery. They empower families with knowledge, helping them make informed decisions and feel confident throughout the birthing experience.

11

Why do I need to take a childbirth class?

Childbirth classes provide essential information and practical tools to help you prepare for labor, delivery, and postpartum. They cover topics like pain management, birthing techniques, and newborn care, reducing fear and building confidence for the birthing experience.

12

No, but you may be able to submit a claim with your insurance company. After completing the class, I will provide you with a certificate of completion and a receipt, which can be used for reimbursement submission to your insurance provider.
